Children will soon be climbing and exploring logs provided by the Forest Products Commission (FPC) to nature playgrounds across the State.
In a unique partnership with the nature play industry, the FPC has started providing native timber products not suitable for the traditional market for use in playgrounds.
The concept is focused on encouraging children to climb, use their imagination, explore and have nature-based experiences.
Research shows nature-based experiences provide children with health, development and emotional benefits.
The project allows for greater utilisation of forest resources as the logs supplied would normally be left behind as part of the harvesting process, or burnt during mining or other infrastructure projects.
Industry has struggled to access suitable products in the past. So far, the FPC has provided the nature play industry with 150 tonnes, and is continuing negotiations to meet demand.
