SEED CLEANING AND TREATMENT SERVICES

The Seed Centre offers the services of:

  • Scarification: the mechanical abrasion of the seed coat to remove dormancy.
  • Heat treatment: the exposure of seed to high temperatures with or without water to break seed dormancy.
  • Stratification: cold treatment of seed over a period of weeks once the seed is fully imbibed. This treatment can improve the evenness of seed germination.
  • Viability testing: Seed testing to determine the number of viable seeds per gram is now available. This is a standard assessment made on all seed sold by the Seed Centre.
  • Seed extraction: The extraction of seed from a raw material such as capsules, pods, follicles and cones.
  • Seed cleaning (purifying): The cleaning of seed to a high level of purity for machine precision sowing. Two levels of purity are offered:
A class seed => 98% clean (for precision single seed sowing)
B class seed=> 90% clean (for precision multiple sowing)
  • Seed sizing: Seed sized for more uniform germination in the nursery.
