PROFILE AND HISTORY

The Forest Products Commission’s (FPC) nursery forms part of our Plant Propagation Centre at West Manjimup, a 266-hectare site dedicated to commercial production and research into seeds and seedlings.

Originally opened by the then Agricultural Department as a tobacco research facility, the site was transferred in 1968 to the Forests Department, where bare root tree seedlings were grown. As the needs of forestry evolved and progressed, the West Manjimup facility was transferred to the FPC in October 2000 when the FPC was created.

Since then, the site has expanded into a fully containerised production system which delivers in excess of 14 million tree seedlings annually to commercial customers.

The nursery is a vital link in the supply of seedlings for our Strategic Tree Farming (STF) program.

The site also houses our Seed Technologies centre, responsible for research and development into seed genetics and improvement and investigating new tree farm species.

Quality is our goal

The prime function of the nursery is to produce quality seedlings for our customers.

Our seedlings have superior characteristics and their quality is assured through ongoing accreditation and frequent auditing of our processes and performance under ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental Management Systems).

The nursery is also accredited and operates under the high standards of the NGIA Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme. Even without those accreditations and certifications, our focus would still be on striving for excellence.

The nursery is a two-time back-to-back winner of the WA NGIA Award for Best Large Production Nursery, which acknowledges the efforts of businesses and individuals within the industry who make every effort to achieve the mantle of best practice.
