METHODOLOGY
In each region, various local factors have been assessed including wood properties, climate, soil type, hydrology and landforms to identify specific driver species that will support relevant outcomes. In addition, the FPC has also undertaken extensive reviews of timber supply and demand to evaluate markets for products derived from these driver species.

In medium rainfall areas, the plans show how the FPC will use eucalypts for sawlogs or maritime pine as the main drivers for combining commercial tree planting with tackling priority NRM issues, such as salinity and waterlogging. Focused planting of tree species maximises the opportunity for processing, creating additional jobs and stimulating local economies through the development of new industries as these trees reach a harvestable age.
In the higher rainfall areas of the South West, the plan aims to expand radiata pine plantings to maintain the competitiveness of the State's significant pine industry.
The FPC is currently working with growers and industry representatives to produce industry development plans for sandalwood and oil mallee.
