Caring for the environment
Part 3 Functions of Commission
12. Principles on which Commission is to act
(1) The Commission in performing its functions must try to ensure that a profit that is consistent with the planned targets is made from the exploitation of forest products while ensuring —
(a) the long-term viability of the forest products industry; and
(b) the principles of ecologically sustainable forest management are applied in the management of indigenous forest products located on public land.
Ecologically sustainable forest management is one of the FPC’s key guiding principles, enshrined in the Forest Products Act 2000.
In order to deliver on our vision of a flourishing environment, FPC must maintain its unwavering commitment to environmental protection in everything we do.
The three principles by which FPC supports sustainable forest management are:
- maintaining ecological processes within forests (the formation of soil, energy flows, and carbon, nutrient and water cycles)
- maintaining biological diversity of forests
- the full range of environmental, economic and social benefits to the community from all forest products.
Our commitment is demonstrated constantly, through rigorous internal processes and environmental controls, continuous education and workforce development, strong stakeholder engagement, continuous improvement and independent auditing and certification of our processes, systems and procedures.
This ensures that we protect the environment at every step of the way to ensure that Western Australia’s native and plantation timbers will continue to be a sustainable resource for many generations to come.
