Furniture
Indoor
Traditionally jarrah has been the major timber species used in manufacture of high quality indoor furniture. Jarrah timber from mature trees is deep red-brown, but from regrowth is paler in colour. Government policy is to increase the amount of value adding to native hardwood timbers, combined with the allowable harvest of jarrah logs reducing to 140 000 cubic metres from 2003. Consequently, jarrah timber will increase in value.
Outdoor furniture
Western Australia has three major manufacturers of outdoor furniture (Jensen Jarrah, Clarecraft Industries Pty Ltd and Inglewood Products Group), using mainly jarrah, and these companies produce about 90 per cent of Australias outdoor furniture exports. The quality and quantity of available timber will be affected from 2003.
Finewood
There is increasing interest in the States finewood furniture industry, and the School of Wood at the Forest Heritage Centre at Dwellingup produces excellent craftsmen. There is a regular but limited market for individual pieces of high quality furniture.
Craftsmen can obtain permits from Forest Products Commission offices to harvest small quantities of timber from the forest floor. See About our Forests.
