FPC’s unique partnership with Synergy is helping to lessen the impacts on the environment of power generation, and deliver cleaner and greener power to your homes and businesses.

Over 10 million trees will be planted in Western Australia in 2009 as part of a major greenhouse gas reduction project between electricity retailer Synergy and the FPC. These first trees will cover about 5,000ha, equivalent in area to 12.5 Kings Parks.

The partnership would generate carbon permits specifically for use by Synergy, and they also have the option to significantly expand the number of trees planted over the next 10 years.

Over the next 30 years, the trees planted in 2009 would store carbon equivalent to taking more than a third of Western Australia's cars off the road for a year.

While the primary purpose is to provide Synergy with tradeable carbon permits under the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, the trees will also provide many other farm benefits such as a reduction in land degradation and shelter for livestock.

Acknowledged as a world leader in low rainfall plantation forestry, the FPC has built a bank of experience in carbon sequestration while helping organisations reduce their greenhouse footprint through planting trees.

As part of the partnership, the FPC offers landowners a commercial agreement to make available areas of their property on which to plant eucalypt species best suited for respective sites.

Tree crops are a significant element in salinity control and prevention. Not only are they environmentally friendly, but they also carry supplementary benefits such as providing shelter for farm livestock, ancillary support for ongoing efforts to address land degradation and they are an additional source of farm income.

Once established the plantings require minimal maintenance and care but the FPC works with landowners to manage the plantings over the life of the project.

Rather than harvesting the trees, the FPC measures the carbon absorbed at regular intervals using the knowledge we have gained over two decades.
