The Wood Encouragement Policy for Western Australia (WEP) is a key action item from the Djarlma Plan for the Western Australian forestry industry.
The WEP aims to support the forestry industry by encouraging the use of responsibly sourced wood in the construction and fit-out of buildings in Western Australia. It highlights the benefits of building with wood which is natural, renewable and stores carbon.
Aimed at State Government agencies, in the first instance, procurement officers are encouraged to give equal consideration to responsibly sourced wood alongside other materials, where fit for purpose. Other organisations and local government authorities are also encouraged to adopt the WEP or similar policy.
Several guides and materials are freely available to assist in the implementation of the WEP:
- Wood Encouragement Policy - Guidance Note 1 - Fire management and safety
- Wood Encouragement Policy - Guidance Note 2 - Life cycle considerations
